For two years now I have used Norton 360 on my PC and it has served me well and not even a virus or any other problems………BUT I do have to shell out 60.00 per year to keep renewing it and having the fresh updates. There sure is a lot more I can do with that 60.00 than spending it on Norton! Then there is the other side of the coin how much will it cost me both in time and possibly PC tech help to remove a virus or what ever else there is out there from messing up my PC. In the past I have had some free virus protection programs along with trojan, malware and worms now and then it did not work. So am I getting the "wrong" free stuff, are they really not as good as rumored to be? My Norton 360 renewal message has been coming up my my PC for about a month now and as always I have been procrastinating the whole thing. Now I am down to the last day and just having to pay another 60.00 seems like a money grab to me. In the past here is the free protection I have had for the PC.
AVGfree ......this freeware say it protects against virus's, malware and spyware but to get a firewall, safe data download protection and anti spam you have to pay 60.00 per year.
Spybot S&D is free and will protect me in the malware dept but not sure since AVGfree does that if I am just repeating a protection? I know there must be other free software out there or others that cost money but not asking you for more each year? What do you use.....how is it working for you......I'm open to suggestions as I am very fast running out of time.

Hello Mike

I have used Norton internet security for a number of years with no problems. Although it is not free like AVG etc., I find that it does work very well and is significantly cheaper than Norton 360 that dies a lot of things I do not need.

Another advantage is that one can deselect the annual renewal option and take advantage of special offers from other venders near renewal time and possibly save even more money.

I've been using Avast Free for years, seems to work well. It is sending up more "ads" lately, however, so I experimented with Avira (also free) on another computer, and though I can't say anything conclusive about it, it seems to cover the bases and stays out of my way.

Hi Mike. I also use Avast. Began with Free then upgraded to their $30.00 offering. I love it and will continue.

Microsoft Windows Defender (Win8) or Microsoft Security Essentials (Win 7). Never paid a dime for virus protection. Always used this product straight from Microsoft. Try it. It works.

Good morning Kevin, thanks for stopping by the blog and taking the time to comment. I have liked 360 and will say never had any issues with my PC but having to pay each year is pricey.

Very nice to hear from you Casey, yesterday I downloaded Avast and will see how it works out. I will say the PC has seemed to speed up some.
Have a good weekend

Hello Dick, I installed Avast yesterday and will see how it works out. I will say 30.00 is not to bad I will have to look that up and see what I get for the 30.00

Hello Keith, I am using Winxp but am thinking of upgrading. If it's free and works I am sold on it.
Thanks for the input and stopping by

I've used windows defender and security essentials. I've also tried avast! and avg. AVG worked fine, but they start sending you begging notices to renew and pay. Avast! did something to my system that forced a recovery for me. One bit of information that i read (grc.com "security now" episodes - VG) is that the first step one should take is to stop running in administrator mode on Windows. Somewhere between 92 and 100 percent of various threats to your computer can be prevented by simply keeping the os and major apps up to date and running in normal user (standard user?) mode. That, and using some common protections for your browser (no script, ghostery, etc.) should do the trick. Steve (w3swg)

Good morning Steve, thanks very much for the great information. My machine is running in admin mode and it can get frustrating when asked for the password and you have no idea what it is. Thanks for that piece of info and at this point I am running AVast and am considering upgrading to windows 7 as I am using XP at this time.

Yep, Norton 360 is giving me headaches on an older machine. I'm now running Avast on it. This thread was of interest for me as well, same reasons. I've had good luck with Norton over the years but I'm tired of paying big $$ for something I can achieve for free. I am also a big fan of Ghostery!

Yes 360 is not off my PC and it is running faster and I am at this time using AVast and I have never heard of Ghostery. Looked it up and seems like a good program to have. Thanks for the recommendation.
