Ok you contesters (and non contesters) here is a question??

The CQ WW CW contest for 2015 is now in the books and I did participate in it as non assisted, QRP and single band. I find that search and pounce is the way to go when my power is low and my antenna is the MFJ 1788 loop antenna. I figured with what is stacked up against me to add to it calling CQ contest would prove to be very frustrating contact wise. In this last contest I did hear a station who was search and pounce and QRP.......not sure about his antenna though BUT he was adding /QRP to the tail end of his call. I found this to be interesting and the times I ran into him in a pileup he seemed to get the attention of the station he was calling very fast and was able to move on to search and pounce more contacts.  I will be honest I have thought about doing this in the past but for various reasons I did not. So this is just a question to those out there......what's your feeling during a contest about a station that signs "VE3WDM/QRP??

  1. Hi Mike, well, I use very seldom the /QRP at the end of my call sign. Sometimes with bpsk31. Most of the time only my call sign. 73 Paul PC4T

  2. Hello Mike. I never use /QRP under any circumstances. ..........I will use F8WBD QRP (note the space between D and Q it's cw) when on or near 14.060 mHz. Only there. Just to advise another QRP operator who may be monitoring that frequency.

    1. Good day Dick, I have used it now and then when calling CQ but not all that often. It was interesting to see how this station was getting contacts with the /QRP ending.

  3. When QRP I seldom use /QRP. Just to long to send. But if it is a dillema for you just try. I've been working /QRP stations in contests. And indeed I'll try harder when I see that someone try to work me as QRP. 73, Bas

    1. Hello Bas, I agree it seemed that once the station calling CQ contest heard the /QRP station they seemed to give them the extra effort to make the contact. Your right I may try the /QRP in the next contest and compare to see how I do when signing /QRP.
Have a good week Bas 73,

  4. Hi Mike...

I never use the "QRP" card in a contest as it just give the other station 4 more characters to mess up in the exchange....

I have been known to use it when DXing and then ask them to show me as VA3QV in the log...

I'm wondering how many /qrp qsos are lost in the files at EQSL and LoTW ...

  5. Hello Mike, in very low power contest QSO's I always use S&P.
I rather give my call twice than to add /QRP. Even with 36 mW I can get an immediate response from the contest station, after sending my call once. PA1B

  6. Mike,

I never use the /QRP. Once in a while I will tell the other station that I am QRP, but I do not make a habit of it.

    1. Good morning Bill, I was just putting it out there as during a contest it seemed this station using /QRP was getting a very fast response to his call. I have never made a habit of it in the past and when in a QSO with a station I do send my power at 5 watts and that informs them I am QRP.
Have a great week Bill and thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.

  7. Hi Mike, late reply.
As a contester and a QRP contester please, DON'T do it !!!

/QRP is not a recognized suffix/prefix legislation wise plus its slows down the "DX" station as well as it creates more problems in copying you. someone will copy you with it, some without and the UBN will grow up.

    Just my 2 cents

    1. Stefano very nice to hear from you and sorry for taking some time to get back to you, I can see that it will increase time and also may throw off the op's wondering what I am doing.
      Have a great weekend
